Are professional certifications worth it?

A certification can be worthwhile when it supports work you want to do, structures useful learning, and is recognized by your intended employers or clients. Start with that fit before paying.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics distinguishes nongovernmental certification from government-issued licensing and treats educational certificates separately. Terminology varies: check the specific issuer’s requirements and award. BLS definitions

Does earning the credential require an exam, experience, a project, or a combination? Completing preparation does not necessarily award the certification.

A professional weighs study time and books against a portfolio of practical skills on a balanced scale.
Weigh the commitment against skills you can use.

Connect it to real work

Name one goal, then compare it with the official objectives.

SnowPro Core covers Snowflake architecture, administration, data movement, performance, and collaboration. That breadth may reveal gaps if you mainly write queries. Official SnowPro overview

Turn relevant objectives into evidence: an explanation, a small project, or a task you can perform. Keep that work useful beyond the exam.

Choose a credential for a clear purpose.

Your next stepInvestigate

Check your goal, syllabus fit, recognition, and available effort. Proceed when they fit; otherwise investigate, choose another credential, or revisit later.

Check recognition and effort

Review recent roles you actually want. Record the required skills and exact credential wording. Distinguish “required” from “preferred,” and a named certification from general platform experience.

A few postings do not establish industry-wide demand.

For internal development, ask which responsibilities the learning would support. A credential does not guarantee a job, promotion, or salary increase.

Include exam charges, training, learning resources, retakes, and renewal. This time example is arithmetic, not a preparation-time prediction.

Check maintenance too. Snowflake currently lists a two-year renewal cycle with several continuing-education routes; verify eligibility for your credential. Continuing education

Decide what to do next

Proceed when the goal, syllabus, recognition, and effort fit. Otherwise, investigate what is unclear, build foundations, choose another credential, or wait.
